Transition Area (TA) - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
You must pick up your race packet so you can access
your race numbers. For security reasons, we only allow competitors in the TA. Therefore,
you must be body marked with your race number and the bike you're bringing in must
have a matching race number attached. If you picked up your packet and got body
marked on Friday evening, you can check into the TA with all your gear. If not,
stop by packet pickup first, attach your bike number, and then get body marked at
the station just outside of the TA before checking in.
One other tip: We recommend checking tire pressure on your bike and filling
your tires as needed while at your car. That way you won't have to bring a pump
into the TA. Note that there will be a Bike Repair Station on site in case you have
some last minute issue.
The TA has three long rows of 20-foot bike racks.
Each 20-foot bike rack is designed to hold 14 bikes/competitors. We don't assign
individual spots on the racks, but we do assign you to a specific rack. There will
be a sign on the end of each rack indicating the race numbers/competitors assigned
to the row. TA Marshals working the TA can provide assistance on finding your row.
Be respectful of your fellow competitors and confine your gear to a single spot
on this assigned row. We recommend that you reference the
TA map on the website for more details.
Yes. The transition area closes at 7:00 am for all
participants, regardless of what wave you are in. All of your gear must be set up
in the TA by this time. This helps to ensure the security and safety of all our
competitors and their equipment. Thank you for your cooperation.
After you've finished the race, you may re-enter
the TA to claim your gear. There will be a specific "TA Gate" set up for this purpose
so that you don't interfere with other competitors that still might be using the
race gates. If you do need to get your gear before all competitors have finished,
we ask that you respect your fellow competitors and stay out of their way. Only
competitors are allowed in the TA, so a TA Marshal will check your body marked race
number before allowing you to enter. Leave the race number attached to your bike
as the TA Marshals will also check to make sure that the bike race number matches
your body mark before they allow you to leave the TA with the bike.
Before the bike and run portions, you will be able
to "change" into anything you place in your spot in the TA. However, the TA is in
no way protected (i.e. you're in full view of everyone) so you'll want to make sure
you exit the swim wearing at least your base layer of clothing. In other words,
public nudity is not allowed.
When coming towards the TA at the end of the bike
course, you must reduce your speed to a safe level. At the Dismount sign you must
stop and dismount your bike, and then you may proceed to push it into the TA. You
may run with your bike, but be careful of slippery grass and do not get in the way
of other competitors. You must return your bike to your designated spot in the TA
and your bike must be in an upright position on the rack.
- Your bike of course!
- Bike helmet (required)
- Water/sports drink bottles (for your bike)
- Biking shoes, if you have them,
- Any change of clothes for the bike and/or run course
- Running shoe
- Any gel/food that you need
- Pants/jacket in case it's cool outside
- Small towel to designate your spot in the TA, and for quick dry off after the
swim
Remember, you are not allowed to have outside help at any time during the
race, so make sure EVERYTHING you need to race is in the transition area before
the start of the race at 7:00 am. We recommend you practice setting up and using
your TA spot - with all the gear you plan on bringing - prior to the race. You'll
learn how to work in a small area, the best layout for your gear (so you don't try
to pull your bike jersey on after your helmet), and how to avoid losing those nice
goggles because you flung them three rows away.
